Getting Started: What AB-410 Actually Asks of You
Your orientation to the Intelligent Applications Builder exam β what it covers, what it deliberately leaves out, and how to read the blueprint without wasting weeks on the wrong material.
What this exam is really about
AB-410 is about building business apps that have AI baked in from the start.
Not βhere is an app, now bolt a chatbot onto it.β More like: the table summarises its own records, a column writes its own text, a page builds itself from a sentence you typed, and a flow calls a prompt the way it would call any other action.
You stay in low-code the whole way. No C#, no TypeScript, no Azure Functions. If you find yourself writing a plug-in, you have wandered into a different exam.
Where AB-410 came from
This one matters, because it explains why the exam feels the way it does.
AB-410 is not a brand-new idea dropped into an empty space. Microsoft created it as the direct replacement for PL-200, the old Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate. Microsoftβs own transition guidance puts it plainly: if you are not close to testing for PL-200, take AB-410 instead.
The exact succession, from Microsoft's own tables
The PL-200 credential page carries a retirement warning that links through to Microsoftβs credentials transition blog. That blog contains two tables worth knowing about:
Table 1 β retirement and replacement: Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate (Exam PL-200) retires 31 August 2026, and its listed replacement is Intelligent Applications Builder Associate (Exam AB-410).
Table 2 β what to do instead: βIf youβre not close to testing for this examβ β Exam PL-200 β βPrepare for and take this exam insteadβ β Exam AB-410.
So the DNA of AB-410 is functional-consultant DNA: configure, model, automate, and now also apply AI β rather than write code.
That inheritance shows up everywhere in the blueprint. You will be asked to recommend an environment strategy, evaluate which built-in agent fits, configure a business rule. You will not be asked to compile anything.
The three domains and their weights
Microsoft publishes the weights as ranges. Learn them as ranges β a question about exam structure will not reward false precision.
| Domain | Official weight | What it is really testing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Create a foundation for intelligent applications | 25β30% | Solution design decisions, environments, ALM, and the Dataverse data model β including the AI-aware bits like prompt columns and row summaries |
| 2. Create intelligent applications | 25β30% | Model-driven apps, generative pages, canvas apps, reusable Power Fx, and handing off to a Copilot Studio agent |
| 3. Build business application logic and automation | 40β45% | Cloud flows, AI hub prompts and models, business rules, business process flows, and the calculated/rollup/formula column family |
Domain 3 is nearly half the exam β plan accordingly
At 40β45%, Domain 3 is worth roughly as much as Domains 1 and 2 combined. If your study time is limited, the highest-return material is:
- AI hub prompts and models β and specifically the symmetry of consuming each one in both apps and cloud flows.
- The three column types β calculated, rollup, and formula. They look interchangeable and are not.
- Business rules versus business process flows β different problems, frequently confused.
That said, do not skip Domain 1. The data-modelling questions there are the foundation the other two domains assume you already have.
What AB-410 is not
This is the single most useful thing to internalise early, because it saves you from studying the wrong material for weeks.
| Belongs to | Topics that are NOT on AB-410 | Why the confusion happens |
|---|---|---|
| PL-400 (Power Platform Developer) | C# Dataverse plug-ins, PCF components in TypeScript, Azure Functions, custom connector authoring, the Dataverse Web API and SDK, CI/CD pipelines | Both exams live in the Power Platform, so the product names overlap even though the depth does not |
| AB-620 (Copilot Studio) | Building agents inside Copilot Studio β topics, tools, MCP, agent ALM, multi-agent orchestration | AB-410 does mention creating an agent from a canvas app, which sounds like agent-building but is only the hand-off |
| PL-900 (Fundamentals) | High-level 'what is Power Platform' positioning | Fundamentals content feels familiar, but AB-410 assumes it rather than testing it |
| PL-300 (Power BI) | Data modelling in Power BI, DAX, report authoring | Power BI appears in AB-410's product list, but only as something you embed or enrich with |
The one boundary people get wrong on exam day
AB-410βs blueprint contains the bullet βCreate a Copilot Studio agent from a canvas app.β Candidates read that and go off to learn topics, tools, and agent orchestration.
Do not. That bullet is about the hand-off point β the prerequisites, the constraints, and the act of creating the agent from the app. What happens inside Copilot Studio afterwards is AB-620βs exam, not this one.
The same logic applies to βrecommend extensibility optionsβ in Domain 1. Recommending that a scenario needs a plug-in is in scope. Writing the plug-in is not.
Meet Kite Freight
Throughout this study guide you will keep running into the same small company, because concrete beats abstract every time.
Kite Freight is a mid-size logistics operator. They move pallets between depots, and they have outgrown the spreadsheets.
- Nadia is the maker. She came from the operations side, learned Power Apps on the job, and has no development background. She is who this exam is written for.
- Ravi runs operations. He is the one who says βI need to see at a glance whether a shipment is in troubleβ without specifying a single technical requirement.
- Mei is the Power Platform admin. She owns environments, security roles, and the settings that quietly gate half the AI features you will meet.
When a feature has an admin prerequisite, Mei will turn up. When a feature exists to answer a real business question, Ravi asked for it. Nadia does the building.
How to use this guide
The modules follow the official blueprint order, and each one maps back to specific exam objectives. A few honest notes on method:
Three habits that actually move the needle
- Learn the boundaries, not just the definitions. AB-410 is heavy on βwhich of these four would you chooseβ questions. Knowing what a rollup column is earns you nothing if you cannot say when a formula column is the better answer.
- Watch for admin prerequisites. Several AI features are dark until an administrator enables an environment setting. Those prerequisites are testable, and they are easy marks.
- Do not memorise numbers Microsoft has not published. Where the documentation genuinely conflicts with itself β and on this examβs subject matter it occasionally does β this guide says so rather than inventing a clean answer.
There is no Microsoft Practice Assessment for AB-410 yet, which is unusual and worth knowing. It means the official free safety net most candidates lean on does not exist for this exam.
