About the NVIDIA NCP-AIN Exam

Master the NVIDIA-Certified Professional: AI Networking (NCP-AIN) exam β€” configuring, verifying, and troubleshooting the fabrics that AI clusters actually run on, across both Spectrum Ethernet and InfiniBand.

The complete practice exam for the NVIDIA-Certified Professional: AI Networking (NCP-AIN) exam. This is a professional-level credential aimed at engineers who already work on AI fabrics day to day. Where the associate-level NCA-AIIO asks you to recognise what each component is for, NCP-AIN asks you to configure it, verify it behaved, and work out what to do when it did not.

The guide covers AI data center design including rail-optimized topologies, scalable units, and GPU-to-GPU communication paths; NVIDIA Spectrum Ethernet including RoCE, QoS with ECN and PFC, adaptive routing, BGP-EVPN multi-tenancy, NVIDIA Air simulation, What Just Happened telemetry, NetQ monitoring, DOCA installation, and SuperNIC configuration; NVIDIA InfiniBand including subnet management, routing and topology, InfiniBand-native QoS with service levels and virtual lanes, and UFM fabric monitoring; Kubernetes integration with the Network Operator, SR-IOV, and RDMA device plugins; the troubleshooting toolchain spanning ibdiagnet, UFM system health, WJH, and the standard InfiniBand and RDMA diagnostic utilities; and automation with Ansible and NVUE.

Who Should Take This Exam?

The NCP-AIN certification is designed for network engineers, AI infrastructure engineers, HPC and datacenter network specialists, and solution architects who deploy and operate NVIDIA fabrics in production. It validates professional-level depth: not just knowing that a fabric uses adaptive routing, but knowing how to enable it, how to confirm it is working, and how to tell adaptive-routing behaviour apart from a congestion problem.

You are expected to be comfortable at the command line and with real network operations. The exam assumes working familiarity with both Ethernet and InfiniBand β€” and it will not let you specialise in only one of them.

Prerequisites: No hard prerequisite. NVIDIA recommends hands-on experience deploying and operating NVIDIA Spectrum Ethernet and InfiniBand fabrics for AI workloads.

Typical study time: 6-10 weeks of focused study for an experienced network engineer

Exam Domains & Weights

The NCP-AIN exam is organised into 6 official domains, and NVIDIA publishes the domain weights in its Exam Study Guide. The percentages below are NVIDIA’s own published weights.

DomainOfficial WeightPractice Qs
AI Data Center Design and Optimization5%24
NVIDIA Spectrum Networking30%64
NVIDIA InfiniBand Networking30%63
Kubernetes Integration5%24
Troubleshooting Tools20%50
Automation and Configuration10%25
Total100%250

⚠️ How we allocated the practice questions: NVIDIA’s published weights are preserved exactly β€” they are the vendor’s numbers and we have not adjusted them. The practice-question counts, however, are not a strict pro-rata split. A literal 5% share would give the two smallest domains only 12 or 13 questions each, which is too thin to practise against or to produce a meaningful score. Both 5% domains are therefore floored at 24 questions, and the difference is taken from the two 30% domains. Study to the official weights above; use the question counts as drill volume, not as a signal about exam emphasis.

πŸ’‘ Study tip: The single biggest trap in this exam is blurring the two fabrics. Ethernet and InfiniBand solve the same problems with genuinely different mechanisms, and questions are written to catch anyone who has learned the vocabulary without the model. On the Ethernet side, congestion management means RoCE with ECN marking, PFC pause, DSCP or PCP classification, and traffic classes, configured through NVUE or Cumulus Linux. On the InfiniBand side it means service levels, virtual lanes, SL-to-VL mapping, and VL arbitration under a subnet manager β€” and InfiniBand is lossless by credit-based flow control, so InfiniBand does not use PFC at all. Learn the two lists separately before you try to compare them. Beyond that, get properly fluent with the troubleshooting toolchain rather than just recognising the names: know what ibdiagnet reports and when you would run it, what UFM system health tells you that a link-status check does not, and what What Just Happened gives you that an interface counter cannot. Finally, treat verification as a first-class skill β€” a large share of professional-level questions are less “how do I configure this” and more “I configured it, how do I prove it is working.”

NVIDIA Certification Path

NCP-AIN is one of two professional-level infrastructure certifications NVIDIA offers, alongside NCP-AII (AI Infrastructure). The associate-level NCA-AIIO is the usual starting point: it covers AI fundamentals, GPU infrastructure, and cluster operations broadly, and it is worth holding the ideas from it in your head before attempting this exam.

The split between the two professional exams is a clean one. NCP-AII is about the cluster β€” the systems, the GPUs, the deployment and validation of the compute estate. NCP-AIN is about the fabric that connects it: the switches, the transport, the congestion behaviour, and the tools you reach for when a training job slows down and the GPUs are not the reason. If your day job is networking, this is the one that matches it.

Study Tips

  1. Build two separate mental models, then compare them β€” learn Ethernet congestion management (RoCE, ECN, PFC, DSCP, traffic classes) and InfiniBand QoS (service levels, virtual lanes, SL-to-VL, VL arbitration, credit-based flow control) as distinct systems first; comparing them before you know each one is how people talk themselves into wrong answers
  2. Use our practice exam β€” try the 20 free questions first to gauge your readiness
  3. Remember InfiniBand does not use PFC β€” it is lossless by credit-based flow control; any answer that applies PFC to an InfiniBand fabric is wrong, and this distinction is tested
  4. Learn the tools by what they uniquely tell you β€” ibdiagnet for fabric-wide diagnostic sweeps, UFM for fabric management and system health, What Just Happened for the reason a packet was dropped, NetQ for real-time network state; being able to pick the right one for a symptom is the actual skill
  5. Practise verification, not just configuration β€” for every feature you learn to enable, learn the command or view that proves it took effect; professional-level questions lean heavily on this
  6. Do not skip the small domains β€” design and Kubernetes integration are only 5% each, but they are also the areas most candidates leave until last and then run out of time on
  7. Get hands-on with NVIDIA Air β€” it is free, it is on the blueprint, and simulating a topology is far more effective than reading about one
  8. Check the official page β€” the official NCP-AIN exam page always has the latest objectives and study guide
