About This Learning Companion
Before buying: The real Microsoft Office Specialist assessment uses hands-on, performance-based projects in Excel and may include interactive components. This independent bank contains multiple-choice learning questions, not a lab environment or an exam simulation. Explanations and self-directed Try in Excel tasks help you understand and practise the skills. Your practical work is not automatically assessed, and a bank score does not demonstrate hands-on readiness or predict an exam result. Excel access and the certification exam are not included.
Excel for Accounting Associate covers preparing accounting data, building a trial balance, working with financial statements and carrying out routine accounting activities. Workbook examples include payroll records, bank reconciliations, depreciation and loan schedules.
The current Microsoft certification page links the MO-220 skills outline. This companion follows its four published domains. The questions are original teaching material, not official Microsoft items or recalled exam questions. Microsoft does not endorse this resource.
Who Is It For?
Students and business users learning to apply Excel to bookkeeping and accounting tasks. Microsoft describes approximately 150 hours of instruction and hands-on experience with Excel and accounting. Reading questions does not replace that experience.
Use an appropriate Excel installation for practical work. Questions that depend on desktop features identify Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows where needed. Features can differ on the web or Mac. Formula examples use English function names and comma argument separators; your locale may use different separators.

Turn an Answer Into Excel Practice
After answering, read the explanation and the reasons the other choices fail. Follow the Microsoft reference when a behavior is unfamiliar. Complete a practical task in Excel, change an input, and check that you can explain the result without looking at the answer.
The following exercises use hypothetical values in a new practice workbook. Do not use a file containing personal, payroll or confidential accounting information.
Data: Preserve a Numeric Value While Changing Its Display
Enter 12450.5 in A1 and =A1*2 in B1. Apply a monetary number format with two decimal places to A1.
Check: B1 still returns 24901. The number format changes the display, not the stored number. Compare this with replacing A1 with a text description and explain why presentation and data type are different decisions.
Trial Balance: Calculate a Difference
Create separate Debit and Credit columns. Enter debit amounts 1200 and 800, and a credit amount 2000. Calculate the sum of each column and then debit total minus credit total.
Check: the difference is 0. Change the credit amount to 1900 and confirm the difference becomes 100. A zero difference checks equality of the two totals; it does not prove that every account classification or transaction is correct.
Statements: Distinguish Formatting From Rounding
Enter revenue 230000 and operating income 28759. Divide income by revenue in a third cell, then display that result as a percentage with one decimal place. In a separate cell, use ROUND to round the ratio to four decimal places.
Check: the unrounded ratio is approximately 0.12503913. Its formatted display is 12.5%, while the rounded numeric result is 0.125. Explain why changing a cell’s format does not change the value used by a later calculation.
Routine Activities: Check Straight-Line Depreciation
Use 27600 for asset cost, 3600 for salvage value and 6 annual periods for useful life. Calculate one year’s depreciation with =SLN(27600,3600,6).
Check: the result is 4000 per year. Six annual charges total 24000, leaving the 3600 salvage value. Change useful life to 72 monthly periods and explain why the result is then a monthly charge, not an annual one.
A Practical Study Routine
- Find a gap: use the free preview to identify a concept you cannot explain confidently.
- Read the source: check the linked Microsoft guidance and its platform requirements.
- Do the task: practise in Excel and compare the result with an explicit expected value.
- Change an assumption: alter a date, amount, reference or filter and predict what should change.
- Repeat without prompts: complete a small accounting workflow from a plain-language requirement.
Use the official certification page for booking information and current requirements. Use this companion alongside real Excel practice, not as evidence of hands-on readiness.
